Before the addition of the new Waste Water Facility, the waste that was treated, using the old system was dumped back into Raquette Lake. The pollution this caused was very harmful to the organisms within the lake. This dumping was in effect, a direct violation toward nature and the environment. As the awareness of pollution and the importance of keeping our environment clean has become an important issue around the world, it has also been an issue regarding the Adirondacks. As a direct result of the awareness, an alternative solution was presented for the disposal of human waste. One solution was the creation of the Waste Water Treatment Facility recently built at Camp Huntington. At a cost of over 1.2 million dollars this new facility was opened in July of this year. It exists for the purpose of maintaining the "natural" beauty of Raquette Lake and the surrounding community. As waste enters the facility, it is processed and broken down through a systematic process of stages. It is then sent to a leeching field, where it is further processed by nature. This new process of waste treatment is clearly monitored daily by the caretaker, Dwayne Perry. Dwayne's close attention to detail is obvious by the meticulously clean appearance of the facility. His pride in his work is an asset to the camp. The monitoring of various bacteria is a critical process that equalizes the waste so that it is not harmful to the environment. It also provides a safer, healthier and more pleasant environment for the plants, animals and humans that live, breath, swim and drink the waters of Raquette Lake. The addition of this facility proves that there are in fact people who feel there is a need to protect our natural resources. This also proves that people are aware of the importance of taking action that is needed to conserve and protect the environment.
