~Allyson MurphyThe trapperŐs cabin is located behind William West DurantŐs cabin at Huntington Camp on Raquette Lake. The cabin was used for skinning and cleaning the daily game, as well as being the home of the trappers. The guests of Camp Pine Knot, as it was formerly known, would hunt then leave the messy and time-consuming chores for the true hunters that would finish the job by skinning and cleaning the carcasses. The trappers divided the gap between the upper-crust elite and the wilderness, and also allowed the guests to feel like they were the outdoors type. The trappers were only a few of DurantŐs staff who lived and worked at the camp full time. The outward appearance of the cabin is much different than the cabins that were used by the guests on retreat. It is a small, plain, one-room cabin with no plumbing. Unlike the cabins located directly in front and on either side, it has no ornaments or intricate carvings. This was where the help lived, and they were not considered important enough for their cabin to be as elaborate. They were there to work.
This is our interpretation of the trapperŐs cabin as it was used during the time Durant owned and operated Camp Pine Knot. We learned this through what we saw, heard, and read during our experience at Raquette Lake. Since we weren't there during the actual time period, we can not fully comprehend or know what went on at the trapperŐs cabin, but merely speculate.
