Durant's Dock

W.W. Durant: A Man of the Adirondacks

In 1880 William West Durant was the owner of a piece of property, Camp Pine Knot, on Raquette Lake, New York.  William West built a private residence directly to the right of the main dock; of course he furnished his residence with all of the comforts of home.  But perhaps the most interesting attribute of Durant’s "private" residents was his dock.

The above scene is a virtual reality tour of the view that is seen from the dock on Durant’s’ property.  Granted the dock that appears there today is not the original dock, but at least todays dock is built where the original one was, and the scenery probably has not changed all that much.  Unfortunately there is no concrete facts given about Durant’s dock but given the proper information one can make inferences about the dock.
Perhaps Durant built a private dock to show off his wealth, as many rich families did at that time.  Of course there is a more risqué idea as to why he built his dock, and that would be for "private" entertainment.  It is a little known fact that Wm. Durant was not a faithful husband, he was in fact seeing Mrs. Kirby (a local resident).  So, perhaps while Mrs. Durant was out on her houseboat, he was wooing Mrs. Kirby with the fabulous view he had from his dock.

Since there is no historical evidence linked to Durant’s’ dock one has to use their imagination as to what the above scene was used for.
